East Campus Residence Complex renovation is a part of the Long-Range Plan for Housing and Dining. East Campus Residence complex is comprised of Hewett Residence Tower, Manchester Residence Tower, and Vrooman Dining Center and is located in the Northeast district of campus. This complex was constructed in 1966 and houses over 1,600 students. The budget cost for renovating this complex is $35 million.
Hewett Hall will be the first tower in the complex to be renovated and the construction will take approximately one year. This project will renovate the aging infrastructure of the traditional residence hall, upgrade the exterior building envelope, upgrade many of the outdated building systems including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, upgrade the fire detection system, install a sprinkler system, and reconfigure some of the living spaces. When Vrooman reopens, it will be used as a welcoming area for the complex. There will be offices, classrooms, and meeting rooms on the upper level. The lower level will house with UCLA and others academic support programs.
Overall, the project is progressing according to schedule. Anticipated completion of the Hewett Hall will be completed in late July; Building Services of Facilities Management will clean the building before it is reoccupied in fall 2008. Vrooman is scheduled to re-open January 2009. Manchester Hall will be taken out of service at the summer for renovations and is expected to reopen in August 2009..
